Gum Springs Earns STEM Kits

Gum Springs Elementary in Jefferson, Georgia received some welcome guests earlier this month during their Read Across America Day when Georgia United Credit Union and the Gladiators stopped by to deliver STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) kits to the media center valued at approximately $1,200. Gum Springs Student Council Members accepted the donation from Georgia United Community Development Officer Kim Wall and Mike Miller & Mascot Maximus from the Atlanta Gladiators joined the fun. Georgia United also donated 250 Money Mammals financial literacy books to the media center.Gum Creek Elementary received the STEM donation as a result of having earned the highest level of participation in the Atlanta Gladiators Hat Trick for Reading program. Jill Weldon, Media Specialist, helped Gum Springs students enter the Hat Trick for Reading program and requested a donation that would benefit all students as their chosen prize. The variety of different grade level STEM kits will help students design solutions for assigned engineering challenges. The Hat Trick for Reading program helps stimulate interest in reading among elementary and middle school students in metro Atlanta. Students must read a minimum of three approved books and complete related assignments. Schools submit the names of students who scored a Reading Hat Trick to the Atlanta Gladiators and the winning school receives donations from sponsor companies.Georgia United Credit Union is ranked as one of the top credit unions in Georgia in both size and safety at $1 billion in assets, over 140,000 members and 18 branch locations.
